Paper Prototyping Design Session

Scenario – You are the user of MoFile, and want to find an accordionist. We interviewed 3 personas of our target group (one of them was negative persona Leho), and got very constructive feedback concerning our product.

Negative Persona Leho.

First Leho chose My Interests button and filled in his preferences for “music” and “would like to take part in your band”. Then he moved on to Browse People function, and found Vambola. Vambola did not interest him, and he went back home. He searched for accordionist and found Lembit, who is an accordionist and is searching for members for his band. He was satisfied and wanted to write to him. He did not find a button for that, so he added the contact and sent him a message.

Points to consider:

  • On the main screen he noticed double buttons, which was not a valid function.
  • The bottom line was illogical according to him.
  • My Interests function was irrelevant, not necessary according to him.
  • He thought that there should be top 12 tags to choose from.
  • Button for direct writing necessary before adding the member.
  • Web interface not necessary
  • Less typing more browsing

Secondary User Juhan

Juhan first wanted to set up the party location in his profile, but the application automatically detects the event.  Home-button was confusing, since he was searching for back button.  His next step led to Browse People, where he found Vambola, but he was of no interest. She went back browsing people, and inserted a keyword “accordionist”. The result found Lembit, in search of an accordionist for his band. Juhan wanted to send him a message, but it was not possible without adding him into the contact list. She had to add him to his party profile and only then he was able to send him a message. After sending a message, he wanted to phone him, which was possible after he opened My Contacts and found his profile. In his profile he found his phone number and called him.

Points to consider:

  • Back button instead of home button
  • Send a message without adding the person into your contact list.
  • My Interests (Looking for/Searching) function was difficult to use.

Primary User Georg

Georg started to browse people and found a list.  He did not like the list of people, and found it easier to enter a keyword “accordionist” to MoFile Search.  He found Lembit, and added him to her contacts after categorizing the contact under party profile.

Points to consider:

  • A small number in the corner of Alerts button in the bottom, in case there are new alerts.
  • He suggested to change the order of Main Menu the following way: a) My Contacts, b) My Profiles, etc.
  • Interests into the profile, not separately
  • Consider the representation of Status Update.

Discussion

+ Basic problem is familiar, application would be useful, especially in a work context
+ Possibility of different profiles and control over which social networks to add is useful
+ It’s interesting to browse stuff about random people and useful with conference speakers, for example
+ Web interface for adding information to the profile is much easier than inserting info through the phone
+ The possibility of creating locative hot spots, device-to-device local networks of people is very exciting

- Knowing the interests in any given room does not necessarily lead to a conversation, perhaps only plays a role in a more gradual development of of relationships to people
- In the leisure context in particular people do not really want to play around with their phones
- Limited to certain technology, bulky smart phone would be annoying in the leisure context
- Looking at people through the camera is slightly perverted
- Leaving active the wrong profile in the wrong context is a worry

Scenario 5:Add as a friend – exchange the data, make notes, digital memories (pictures) March 23, 2010

It is late in the morning or early in the afternoon when George wakes up. He has been on the concert of Kimmo Pohjonen. Rebellious accordion sounds are still playing in his head as he browses through all mocards he collected on the conference of locative minds of Northern technologies and on the following concert he attended with new accquintances.
Silja is the girl from the conference who is brilliant in SEO, but also sings in electronic folk band from Rovaniemi. Georg drags the icon of fresh friendship on the mocard of Silja. He recalls that he promised to send her an e-mail adress of Hando Kiviberg from Viljandi. As George already has couple of finnish musicians among his mofile friends he can use the same tag – Finnish Music Groups (FMG). He closes the expanded view of Siljas profile and browes through his tag words. Now he can drag and drop the right tag on the Siljas Profile. In the same way he drags and drops the mocard of Hando on the siljas mocard, small message window pops up and says that e-mail adress, mobile number and webadress of the Viljandi Folk has been sent to Silja. George is surprised that Hando trusted him in a way that allowed him to send an expanded list of contacts.

Scenario 4: Georg Searches and Filters the Profiles; Alerts for New People of Interest March 23, 2010

It is Saturday evening and George has decided to go to Popidiots’ concert which is going to be held in Von Krahl. Since this is a very good concert and a long-awaited event, Krahl is crowded and it is difficult to find his friends, not to mention making new ones.

Fortunately, George is a Mofile user, he takes his iPhone out of the pocket, points the camera at people, and immediately many illuminated lights appear on the screen, each of which shows one Mofile user whose system is turned on. George is interested in music, and in addition to that, today he is interested in listening to good music. He would like to find some interesting people who he can talk about music and why not make music together in the future.

He opens his Mofile device where he can set filters and keywords to search around for peoples’ profiles who fulfill his criteria or have the same keywords in their profile: he notes that he searches for people interested in music, folk music, and restricts the criteria with including the tag “accordion” in the hope to find people who are interested in folk music and the accordions. Recently the band where George played disintegrated, so he also hopes to find new band members to make music with. By limiting the search, Mofile shows George the desired people and their profiles which correspond to the selected criteria. There are 2 suitable profiles, both people are playing accordion.

Suddenly, one tall man enters the room and George’s Mofile gives a signal that one more profile meets the added standards. George looks at the man’s profile more closely and it states that a man named Lembit is looking for a accordion player in his band. „Super“, thinks George and waves to Lembit in order to go and talk with him.

Scenario 2: Georg Creates “Mofile” Profiles and Inserts Keywords. March 23, 2010

Georg is sitting in Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport waiting for the next plane to Amsterdam in order to go on a concert. He is feeling excited about the concert, but also very bored. Suddenly he sees a friend passing by. He waves to him and starts talking to him. He explains about his boredom in the airport terminal waiting rooms, and how tired he is from it.

After listening to Georg’s problem, his friend suggests that he should download a Mobile Profile app called “Mofile“ for his iPhone, and explains shortly what this app is useful for. Georg is very provoked by the thought of using the application, and downloads it to his iPhone. He opens the application which suggests him to create a business profile. He inserts his personal details and then presses OK. Now he is satisfied with his result.

His friend suggests him to create a leisure profile in order to use it in the concert in Amsterdam. Georg chooses another profile and fills it according to his preferences.
Since he goes on the concert, he leaves the last profile on. After that the application asks Georg to complete the next step, which is filling in the necessary keywords in order to find people of interest. He contemplates a little over the keywords, and fills them in. He uses keywords like: “musician”, “accordionist”, “outgoing”, etc.
Now he is ready to try out his new “Mofile” application. He points the camera of his iPhone at the people in the airport and sees only a few bubbles above the heads of people. Georg can see that all people are not familiar with “Mofile” or they do not have iPhones. His friend then explains that it might be possible that they are not the people of Georg’s interest.
Suddenly he hears the call for boarding his flight. He says goodbye to his friend and switches off the mobile phone. He decides to try “Mofile” out in Holland.
